Meet the Ladycats ~ Thursday, November 5

The public is invited to a “Meet the Ladycats” night on Thursday, November 5 at 6:00 p.m. at the Hempstead High School competition gym.  Coach Ricky McCown, head coach for the Ladycats, has a fun night planned for those who attend.  Prizes will be given out and the competition gym will rock with Ladycat Spirit.

The Hempstead Ladycats basketball team started practicing for the 2009-2010 season on Wednesday, October 21.  After completing last season as regional quarterfinalists, the Ladycats are excited and ready to rock for a chance at the state playoffs again this season.

A Letter from the Superintendent

To the Residents of Hempstead ISD:

First of all, I would like to thank everyone who came out to vote in the Hempstead Independent School District tax ratification election (rollback election). Even though our efforts failed, Hempstead ISD is dedicated to our students and will continue to work hard to improve student achievement at all of our schools. We will not short change the education of our children.

Children are our number one priority at Hempstead ISD. Therefore, the next step will be to monitor and adjust the way we operate our schools financially.

The second priority will be to continue our efforts to improve the perception that people have about Hempstead. We work hard at Hempstead ISD to change the perception others have of our district. Despite our efforts, sometimes it appears the harder we try the farther we fall behind in that endeavor. Therefore, we will continue to work hard to move towards becoming an exemplary district. Our academic scores continue to improve and move in a direction that is positive for our schools. Our student athletes work hard to represent the community of Hempstead in a positive way and will continue to do so.

We want to make you, the community, proud of our children in their UIL achievements, both academically and athletically. We will work hard not to fail you.

Although the tax ratification election (rollback election) did not pass, it does not mean that our schools will have to shut down. It does not mean that the quality of instruction will lessen for our children. All it means is that we will have to work harder, better and smarter for our children and the taxpayers of Hempstead Independent School District.

Thank you for your continued support in our efforts to work for you.

Respectfully submitted,

Gene A. Glover
HISD Superintendent

Hempstead Elementary & Early Childhood Campuses are Recognized
as HISD Moves toward Becoming an Exemplary District

By Laurie Bettis
HISD Public Information

For the second year in a row, Hempstead Elementary and Early Childhood campuses earned recognized status in accordance with the Academic Excellence Indicator System (AEIS) and according to official data released by the Texas Education Agency in August.  According to the data released, the elementary missed exemplary status by only four students.

Hempstead Middle School earned an acceptable rating for 2009, only points away from receiving recognized status.

However, despite all the academic gains being made at Hempstead ISD, the district, as well as Hempstead High School , have received an unacceptable rating by TEA for 2009 due to the 2008 drop-out rate and the 2009 TAKS scores for one sub-group in math.  The high school has filed an appeal to the 2008 drop-out rate and, if the district wins the appeal, the district status would be changed to an acceptable rating.

Based on the scores across the district, it is evident that Hempstead ISD is making progress and moving in the right direction to meet the long-term goal to become an exemplary district.  Over the past few years, Hempstead ISD has been making great strides to improve the academic scores across the district.

Aside from the ratings, Hempstead ISD has a lot to be proud of.  Writing scores have been at exemplary status since 2006.  Social Studies reached exemplary status in 2008.  Reading/English Language Arts has been at recognized status since 2006, and the scores met exemplary status in 2009, according to the Texas Projection Measure (TPM).

Math and science have been weak areas in the district in the past, with students struggling to pass the TAKS tests.  However, with the dedicated staff at Hempstead ISD, parental support and the help of the community, the district has continued to make great improvements in these areas.  The district has maintained acceptable ratings in math since 2006 and reached recognized status in 2009 according the TPM ratings.

Science scores have shown major improvements over the past five years.  The district went from 38% of all students passing TAKS in 2005 to 63% passing TAKS in 2008.  According to the TPM, the district received an acceptable rating in 2009 with 81% passing the science TAKS test.

So let the scores speak for themselves, and don't let one little word label a district that has been making great improvements over the past five years.  Through TEAMWORK Hempstead ISD will become an exemplary district.
