Bobcats Celebrate Success with Community Pep Rally as They Head to State Playoffs
Hempstead - The Hempstead Bobcats have something to celebrate as they have qualified for the State 3A Football Playoffs this year. This is the first time they have qualified for the playoffs in over twenty years. The last time the Bobcats made it to the state playoffs was in 1984. In other sports action the community celebrates with the Cross Country Runners as they qualify for regional competition, another event that has been a long time overdue for advancement.
In celebration of the Bobcats successful season, Hempstead ISD is planning another Community Pep Rally on Thursday night, November 10, at the Gazebo in downtown Hempstead . The festivities will open with booths from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. However, the highlight of the evening will be a huge Community Pep Rally at 6:00 p.m. The Bobcats want to thank their fans for supporting them through out their race for the playoffs this season. Come downtown to celebrate with the Bobcats and fire them up to take on the winner of the Hutto - Cameron game.
The Hempstead Community has truly been great supporters of the Hempstead Bobcats as they took on a new season with new and revived leadership. Athletic Director Bobby Spain said, "The Hempstead ISD athletic program has started to show the results of the hard work that our athletes are putting into their workouts." "Our coaches are pushing our athletes to better themselves not only on the playing fields, but in the classroom as well," he said.
Under the direction of Coach Rick Sargent, the Bobcats have accomplished their goal for the season to make it to the playoffs. Coach Sargent told his athletes at the beginning of the season that for his birthday, November 11 th , all he wanted was "a trip to the playoffs." With the discipline, desire and determination that Coach Sargent has instilled in these young men, it has been easy to see that the Cats were likely to extend their football season and wrap up the gift for their coach.
The Bobcats opened their season against the state ranked Brookshire Royal Falcons, upsetting their perfect record by giving them their only loss for the season as they beat the Falcons 20-13. Next the Bobcats hosted Wallis-Brazos to shut them out with a 50-0 victory. The Bobcats traveled to East Bernard to upset their Homecoming festivities by dishing out a loss to the Brahmas beating them 21 - 0. The Bobcats did suffer one loss in the pre-season as they traveled to West Columbia for a 44-14 loss.
The Bobcats opened district play up against the Sealy Tigers, a team they hadn't beaten in over 20 years. Down 13-0 in the fourth quarter, the Bobcats became known as the "Fourth Quarter Bandits" as they came back in the fourth to squeeze out the win 14-13. The Bobcats next went to the Snake Pit in Navasota to take on another team that they had not beaten in quite some time. They ruined another homecoming by beating the Rattlers 26-13. The Bobcats, tied for first place in district at this point, took on undefeated Rice Consolidated in their next game and Bellville in the following game. The Bobcats recorded a loss against both teams to drop in the ranks to the third place team, but with the records of Columbus , Navasota and Sealy, they secured their spot in the playoffs at that point. The Bobcats take on Columbus on Friday night, and are favored to win the game.
Come out and support the student athletes at Hempstead ISD and celebrate with them at the Community Pep Rally Thursday night, November 10. The Veterans' Day Program scheduled for that evening will take place immediately following the pep rally at the Hempstead Elementary cafeteria. The public is invited to spend the evening with the students of HISD by making plans now to attend both events.
